Developing a Climate-Resilient Coffee Production Landscape in Karnataka & Kerala

Coffee is one of the world’s most traded commodities and popular beverages. In India, roughly 70% of production is concentrated in three South Karnataka districts — Kushalnagar, Hasan, and Chikmagalur — which also form part of the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspots.

A leading global soft commodity services group has launched a sustainability initiative across Karnataka and Kerala, India’s key coffee-growing states. The project focuses on building climate resilience for smallholder farmers and developing a low/net-zero carbon model to support livelihoods, soil health, and emissions reduction – combining climate-resilient crop varieties, sustainable farming practices, and digital traceability for end-to-end supply chain transparency.

Climate Resilient Coffee Production

Features Used

  • Farmer Profiling
  • Farm Management
  • Crop Management
  • Sustainability Surveys

Challenge

  • Climate Risks: Rising temperatures and erratic rainfall threatened yields and quality, leaving smallholders highly vulnerable.
  • Soil Degradation: Continuous monocropping and fertilizer dependency were reducing soil fertility.
  • High Emissions: Land use practices, fertilizer application, and inefficient production methods contributed to GHG emissions.
  • Farmer Livelihoods: Price volatility and climate stressors risked undermining farmer incomes and long-term sustainability.

Solution

The project deployed a multi-pronged sustainability strategy supported by digital tools and farmer engagement:

Climate-Resilient Crop Varieties

Introduction of robust coffee varieties able to withstand extreme weather.

Sustainable Farming Practices

Promotion of shade-grown coffee, intercropping, and agroforestry. Practices designed to improve biodiversity, sequester carbon, and reduce emissions.

Digital Farm Management & Traceability

Farmer Profile Creation & Onboarding

  1. Individual Farmer Profiling by Field Technicians
  • Field technicians working directly with farmers can create and update profiles one by one within the application.
  • Each profile captures key details such as farmer demographics, farm size, location, crop practices, and sustainability parameters.
  • This approach is especially useful for in-depth, accurate profiling when working closely with a small group of farmers at a time.
  1. Bulk Farmer Data Import
  • The platform also supports importing large datasets of farmers in one go.
  • This enables rapid onboarding of hundreds or thousands of farmers without needing to manually enter each profile.
  • Bulk import is efficient for scaling programs across cooperatives, producer groups, or large projects.

Farmer Activity Management

  • The application allows field supervisors to record and monitor farmer activities directly in the system.
  • Activities can include land preparation, sowing, fertilizer use, irrigation, harvesting, and adoption of sustainable practices.
  • This creates a digital crop diary for each farmer, ensuring transparency, better planning, and progress tracking against sustainability goals.

Geo-Mapping of Farm Plots

  • Using the mobile app, field supervisors can geo-map each farmer’s plot.
  • This involves capturing the GPS boundaries and key details of the farm such as size, crop type, and land use.
  • The geo-mapping ensures that every plot is digitally verified and linked to the farmer profile.

Baseline Configuration

The baseline survey configuration is the foundation for measuring farmers’ current practices, resources, and environmental impact before interventions begin. It allows stakeholders to capture standardized data across multiple dimensions:

  1. Soil Health – Testing soil quality, nutrient levels, and erosion risks to understand fertility and carbon storage potential.
  2. Biodiversity – Assessing on-farm biodiversity (trees, shade cover, intercrops) that supports ecosystem resilience.
  3. Water – Tracking irrigation practices, water sources, and usage efficiency.
  4. Land Usage – Documenting farm size, crop distribution, and land use changes.
  5. Input Usage – Monitoring fertilizers, pesticides, and other inputs to identify emission hotspots and cost patterns.
  6. Socio-Economic Status – Capturing household demographics, income, and livelihood conditions to measure impact on farmer well-being.

This creates a baseline snapshot against which improvements in sustainability, productivity, and livelihoods can be tracked.

Training Activity Configuration

The training activity module digitizes and monitors farmer engagement and capacity building. It ensures transparency and accountability in extension services:

  1. Crop Activity Update – Supervisors/technicians can record changes in farming practices adopted by the farmer (e.g., shade planting, intercropping, or organic fertilizer use).
  2. Harvest Update – Captures yield and quality data during each harvest cycle, linking it to farmer practices and sustainability metrics.
  3. Activity Report – Generates structured reports summarizing training sessions, farmer adoption, and outcomes, which can be shared with project managers, buyers, or certifiers.

Results

  • Farmer Engagement: Nearly 600 farmers actively onboarded and connected to digital systems.
  • Data Visibility: Geo-mapped farms enable accurate monitoring of land use and emissions.
  • Baseline Insights: Comprehensive farmer profiles provide the foundation for tailored sustainability interventions.
  • Pathway to Net Zero: The integration of agroforestry and regenerative practices is already reducing emissions while enhancing soil carbon sequestration.

Key Takeaways

  • Digital-first approach: Farm management and traceability platforms accelerate farmer onboarding and compliance tracking.
  • Farmer-centric design: Profiling and baselining ensure interventions are tailored to real farmer needs and challenges.
  • Climate-smart practices: Agroforestry, intercropping, and shade-grown coffee are not just sustainable—they improve yields and resilience.
  • Scalable impact: Early success in Karnataka and Kerala demonstrates a replicable model for climate-smart coffee production across other regions.
  • Sustainability as growth: Building resilience safeguards farmer livelihoods while opening premium low-carbon market opportunities.

By combining climate-resilient agriculture with digital innovation, this initiative demonstrates how coffee supply chains can move toward net-zero emissions, sustained farmer incomes, and long-term global competitiveness.
